Here is what our camp looked like when we were set up out on the ice. These are canvas whaling tents built with a simple frame and staked down with rope. Here we cleared the ice and just hammered the stakes into it. Each tent is heated with a single propane stove.

Alaskan Adventures
The trip to Alaska for the honeymoon provided a great opportunity for some fantastic photographs. It is a truly stunning part of the world...the type of wilderness I love. Just as with the coast and north of Norway this type of scenery never fails to inspire me...want to see some of the results? Let's take a look at some of the pictures.
The first part of our trip was spent in the Denali National Park, and a chance to visit the mountain of Denali (otherwise known as Mount McKinley), the tallest peak in North America at over 20,000 ft. We were warned that it can be rare to get an unobstructed view of the mountain due to the weather. The mountain is usually shrouded in cloud, and you can see it less than 30% of the time when visiting the park...but the morning of our trek into the park this was the view...
...not a cloud in the sky. That is from over eighty miles away, the white peak in the picture is Mt McKinley. The clouds did roll in as we made our way towards the mountain, but it was still clear enough that we opted for a flight to get a closer look...
That was definitely one of the highlights of the trip, but to be honest, the entire trip was just full of fantastic photo opportunities, and I was really happy to get some of these amazing shots.
...a moody shot from the Independence Gold Mine, high in the mountains just outside Wassila...
...two bald eagles perched on the docks at Seward... ...an amazingly still lake, allowed for these great reflection shots... ...the remote beauty of Denali...
...then we went on some cruises in Prince William Sound, one out of Whittier and one out of Seward, so that we could see the glaciers up close. The Fjord trips really reminded me of Lofoten in Norway, and aside from a little sea-sickness, the trip was amazing, including some close encounters with a group of Humpback whales (which alas I didn't get on camera due to fighting to keep the contents of my lunch from projecting on my fellow passengers), before getting to see the glaciers. They really are an amazing sight. The ice is so old and dense that blue is the only color of the spectrum that escapes back from the ice in places, which give the glaciers this really bright blue hue that seems unnatural... ...the wonderfully named Surprise Glacier... ...Surprise Glacier 'calving', which is what they call it when the ice slips into the water... ...Surprise Glacier 'calving', which is what they call it when the ice slips into the water...

Valdez, Alaska Adventures
This past week our friends, Paige and Kyle, from back south came to visit us and this great state. We had amazing weather. I tried to inform them that it usually isn't as glorious and not rainy as they experienced, but I'm thankful that we had good weather to tote them around Alaska with.
I would like to try to give you a small glimpse of rural Alaska. Since my bladder inside my preggo body was about to explode, I had to stop. I'm not beneath going in the woods (did that too on this trip), but toilets are always better in my book. Sadly, this is one of the ONLY restrooms on our 6 hour journey. It's not like every hour or two you pass through a small down with a Dairy Queen (though I kinda miss those days). There is nothing. When the lady told me to pick up the bucket...I was a little concerned. Thankfully it just held the toilet paper and there was this lovely "moving" outhouse we could utilize. Wonderful.
This is where we ate dinner. About half way there is this booming town called GlennAllen. We were instructed we needed to stop there and fill up with gas and eat dinner as it was our last opportunity. It had 3 restaurants. Three. I know this as a fact, because we stopped and asked a local when we didn't see anything. Options: a local inn's restaurant, a Thai place in a van (literally), and The Freeze. Guess where we ate.Thursday, August 11, 2011

Hike the Zion Narrows, Utah
By Kate Siber
If any place has the power to inspire awe, it’s the Zion Narrows, southern Utah’s premier hike in Zion National Park. For 16 miles (26 kilometers), the canyon winds voluptuously through the crimson sandstone, in some spots stretching 2,000 feet (610 meters) high and narrowing to 20 feet (6 meters). Lush hanging gardens spring from the walls, stately ponderosa pines grow in nooks, and the water can turn a shade of turquoise that perfectly contrasts with the cliffs’ deep terra-cotta hues. The hike isn’t necessarily a cakewalk, however: For more than half the time, hikers walk in the Virgin River, which can be waist-high, and negotiate cobbles as large and slippery as bowling balls.
Still, the appeal of the area is certainly no secret, and the Zion Narrows attract plenty of keen hikers. Though it’s possible to hike top-to-bottom in one long day or do a shorter out-and-back from the bottom of the canyon, the ideal approach is to take two days, camping overnight at one of 12 designated campsites deep in the canyon. The stillness of evening and the otherworldly glow of moonlight make the perfect atmosphere in which to absorb the beauty of those towering canyon walls, sculpted by elements unfathomably more powerful than ourselves.

Tiger Hills Trekking
Tiger Hill, about 12 km from Darjeeling, is a mecca for tourists visiting the mountains. Trekking in tiger hills is just apt for extreme adventure adrenaline junkies. It is most famous for its sunrising site. Trekking in this terrain provides the most exotic view of the Kanchenjunga traversing through bamboo bushes rhododendron forest. The view of Mt. Everest from this point is sedating. Access to a watch tower is also possible while trekking here. The Tiger Hills can be reached by jeep, but you even can trek to the top. The best time to visit tiger hills is March to May and September to November.
Trekking in Ghoom - a small hilly locality in Darjeeling - will take us to Ghoom railway station, the highest rail station in India, and Ghoom monastery, one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries located just below Ghoom railway station, to see an enshrined image of Maitreya Buddha. From Ghoom you can also visit Senchel sanctuary, which offers great picnic spots, and its two artificial lakes serve as a reservoir for supply of water to Darjeeling town. Many tourists are attracted towards "Senchal Lake" near by Senchel sanctuary for its picturesque beauty of water and blue sky. How about enjoying a picnic in this highest golf course and picnic spot in the world. Exciting trek......indeed.Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Our Camp out!
We enjoyed our first family camp out! We have been wanting to go camping with the kids but with the kids ballgames, and gas prices we decided what was keeping us from just pitching a tent right here in our own yard! Then we could experience it and take notes of what we need to do different. We told the kids we were going to camp out and they got so excited so for a whole day we were getting ready! Steve set up our tent and got all our chairs together. The kids started packing their backpacks with pj's and a change of clothes since they were going on a real camp out! haha I headed for the store and filled an ice chest with some camping essentials! SNACKS! We all knew we were not going to have a camp fire so I just fixed the hotdogs and brought them out to eat! I couldn't wait to sit outside and just watch the stars come out with the kids. Mattie said, "This is a really big screen!" We had lots of bedding and pillows and an air mattress so it was nice and cozy. It was a beautiful evening and I'm so thankful that we did it because it was so much fun. We played games where Mollie held the flashlight and Mattie and Brady danced around watching there shadows grow bigger and they walked either towards Mollie or away from her. They got so tickled at all the things they could make their shadows do! Then we sang devo songs together (this was my favorite) because our goal as parents is to instill in our children a love for God. I want to make singing to God something that they will do to make them feel better, safer, or closer to Him. We enjoyed singing underneath the big beautiful sky while we were amazed by his craftywork. The night did get a little cool but five in a tent was just about perfect for snuggling. I am so thankful to have a family and getting to do special things with them, just enjoying the little things together. The kids are ready to camp out again!
